Galactomyces ferment filtrate: the essence ingredient explained

The Korean essence category exists because of ferments. A step between toner and serum, thin, slightly viscous, sold in a tall bottle and usually built on a ferment filtrate. Galactomyces is the one Korean brands reach for most.

Galactomyces Ferment Filtrate is a fermented-filtrate ingredient, not a standardized active with one fixed effect. Some Galactomyces-containing formulas have clinical data, but those results are product-specific and cannot be assigned to every ferment filtrate. A high percentage on the front tells you how much of that supplied filtrate is in the formula; it does not tell you the concentration of every compound inside it.

Filtrate and lysate are not interchangeable words. A filtrate is what passes through the filter after fermentation. A lysate is made by breaking the cells open. Korean labels distinguish them and so should you when comparing two products that both say fermented on the front.

Reading the percentage claim

An essence advertising 95 percent ferment filtrate has replaced most of its water phase with the filtrate. That is a real formulation decision and it costs more than using water. What it is not is a concentration figure in the sense that 5 percent niacinamide is a concentration figure. The filtrate arrives from the supplier already dilute, so a high percentage means the formula is built on it rather than that the bottle is full of concentrated ferment.

The practical consequence: comparing 95 percent against 90 percent between two brands tells you less than it looks like. Comparing a formula built on ferment against one where the ferment sits after the preservatives tells you a lot.

Why Korea built a category on this

Fermentation carries cultural weight in Korea that it does not carry everywhere. It is how a significant part of the national diet is made, and the association with something being transformed and improved was available to marketers before any skincare product used it. When Korean brands began building essences on ferment filtrates in the 2000s, they were borrowing an existing idea rather than explaining a new one.

That is worth knowing because it explains the volume of ferment products on Korean shelves relative to other markets. It is a formulation tradition with cultural roots, not evidence of a category of ingredient that outperforms others.

Filtrate percentages across brands

Once one brand printed a ferment percentage on the front, the rest had to. The numbers cluster in the nineties because that is what building an essence on a filtrate base produces, and a brand that used slightly less would be advertising a smaller number for no gain. That is why almost every ferment essence lands between 90 and 97 percent, and why the differences between those figures carry so little information. They are a category convention rather than a spectrum of strength.

What to expect and how to pair it

Ferment essences are hydrating steps with a light finish. Korean routines place them after cleansing and toner and before serums, and they layer without conflict because they carry nothing reactive. That makes them a reasonable hydrating layer alongside an active routine, which is exactly how Korean brands position them next to retinol and acid products.

If a ferment essence disagrees with your skin, the likely cause is elsewhere in the formula. Check the end of the list for fragrance and the named allergens Korea requires, and check whether the essence also carries an acid. Paste the list into the reader and it marks both.

For this update: I checked the clinical Galactomyces literature and made clear that the evidence belongs to specific preparations and formulas.

Frequently asked

What is galactomyces ferment filtrate?

It is the filtered liquid left after a yeast called Galactomyces is fermented. In cosmetics it is used as a hydrating base ingredient, often making up most of an essence formula.

Is it the same as the famous Japanese ferment ingredient?

They are different organisms with a similar story. Both are yeast ferment filtrates used as the base of an essence, and both are described in similar terms. The ingredient names on the label are different, so check which one a product actually uses.

What does 95 percent galactomyces mean?

That the ferment filtrate makes up 95 percent of the formula, replacing water as the base. The filtrate itself is largely water, so the number describes the formula structure rather than a concentration of active material.

Does it cause purging or breakouts?

Ferment filtrates have no exfoliating or irritating action, so the purging concept does not apply. If a ferment essence coincides with breakouts, look at the rest of the routine and at the other ingredients in the formula.

Is it on Korea's functional list?

No. Ferment filtrates sit outside the functional actives system, so essences using them stay in hydrating and conditioning language.
